Jordan: Protecting vulnerable refugees in Azraq Camp – JOR942

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated vulnerabilities for refugees inside and outside of camps as well as for the host community. In response to the global outbreak of COVID-19 in December 2019, the Government of Jordan implemented a range of necessary containment measures and restrictions starting from mid-March 2020. This also affected the Azraq camp in Jordan where over 42,000 Syrian refugees live: all non-essential services and businesses were initially closed for three months, leave and work permits were denied, and only essential humanitarian staff could enter the camp. In September 2020, the camp recorded its first officially confirmed COVID-positive case and within the same month, reached 29 official cases. Due to this outbreak, hundreds of people were isolated and all field activities shifted to online and remote interventions, with a special focus on reaching the most vulnerable refugees to ensure their accessibility to services.

Overall Objective

To provide support and protection for the most vulnerable affected by the Syria crisis in Jordan.

Specific Objective

To increase the access to protection services by providing direct cash assistance and integrating them in social networks to reduce the risk of idleness, violence, and exploitation.

Expected Result

300 families will have increased access to emergency cash assistance in Azraq camp to meet most urgent protection.
