Uganda and South Sudan: SCCR – Strengthening conflict and gender sensitive community resilience in protracted crisis in Northern Uganda and Central Equatoria – Nexus UGA926

Since 2013, South Sudan has experienced civil war, intercommunal and localised violence. As a consequence many South Sudanese are either internally displaced or flee to Uganda. There is a lack of two-fold crossborder projects addressing root causes of conflicts and meeting the most urgent needs of especially female refugees, returnees and those of host communities to adequately respond to a protracted crisis beyond geographical boundaries.

Project objective

To contribute to achieving gender equality and to empower all women and girls and to promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies in Uganda and South Sudan.

Specific Objectives

1) Strengthened conflict sensitive community resilience in protracted crisis in Northern Uganda (Bidi Bidi, Imvepi) and Central Equatoria (Yei River County, Kajo Keji County), in particular of women and girls – SDG 5, in particular SDG 5.2. / SDG 16, in particular SDG 16.7.

2) Root causes addressed and mitigated impact of forced displacement in Northern Uganda (Bidi Bidi, Imvepi) and Central Equatoria (Yei River County, Kajo Keji County) – SDG 5, in particular SDG 5.5. / SDG 16, in particular 16.1.

Expected Results

1) Strengthened conflict and gender sensitivity in humanitarian and development assistance through joint programming.

2) Increased female leadership and empowerment of women & girls.

3) Improved conflict resolution capacity & community mediation processes.

4) Protecting women’s rights and preventing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Main Activities

Conduct knowledge sharing meetings, qualitative baseline study and stakeholder mapping, Rapid Gender Analysis
Provide trainings in Gender Equity and Diversity (GED) and Gender Action Planning
Conduct peace and conflict analysis
Provide tailor-made conflict sensitivity HDP trainings
Support women and girls‘ leadership groups and men and boys‘ positive masculinities groups
Establish community farming groups, tree nurseries, enterprises and kitchen gardens
VSLA support for women to access financial support
Promote energy saving stoves and distribute wonderbags
Extend and maintain community roads for market access
Establish and strengthen community peace monitors and groups
Develop the capacity of community peace monitors and groups in conflict management and land rights
Carry out conflict prevention and resolution activities
Facilitate community peace dialogues
Support refugees, returnees and host communities on land rights and natural resource development
Offer capacity development and trainings in psychosocial support (PSS) and SGBV protection
Provide PSS and access to protection and legal services to SGBV survivors
Raise awareness on human rights, women peace & security and SGBV
Carry out advocacy activities on human rights, women peace & security, and SGBV prevention

Location

South Sudan (Kajo Keji, Yei) and Uganda (Bidi Bidi and Imvepi settlements)

Beneficiaries

17,450 refugees, host and migrating communities (60% female; 40% male) and 87.250 final indirect beneficiaries
